Speaking at a BMO Capital Markets event, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime announced that the Xbox 360 has only 11% of the female market and the PS3 just 9%. The statistics do not cover handheld systems or PC ownership.
"This didn't happen by accident," said Fils-Aime. "It's the result of a deliberate attempt to expand the market."
The figures also revealed that the number of female home console primary players in the US amounts to 11.7 million, compared to 33.3 million men. This suggests that 9.36 million of female primary players are Wii owners, 1.29 million own an Xbox 360 and 1.05 million a PlayStation 3.
The Nintendo Wii is the most successful home console of the current hardware generation, having sold over 56 million units worldwide.
