Players can take part in the tests by logging on to the strategy game's official website. During the beta, two sides will occupy the same campaign map, either working co-operatively or against one another.
"After over six months of internal testing, we're happy to finally give all players of Empire: Total War a taste of the future of Total War," said creative director Mike Simpson.
"Information and user feedback gathered from this open beta should help us getting the campaign multiplayer mode ready to be a regular feature in upcoming titles in the Total War series."
Developed by The Creative Assembly, Empire: Total War was released as a PC exclusive earlier this year. It is the fifth entry in the popular strategy series and takes place during the 18th century.
Steam is hosting the open beta, which will commence on December 7.
