Inspired by the film Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, the expansion is based around a deadly tournament run by the titular character and features wave-based challenges.
"This is totally different... basically the idea is that we have this character, Moxxi. She's running this underground coliseum tournament arena thing," said designer Jon Hemingway.
"The best thing you could compare it to is either Horde mode in Gears Of War 2 or Firefight mode in ODST. But even those don't quite sum it up."
The add-on is divided into three Riot Mode arenas, each with a small and big tournament. According to Hemingway, small tournaments take around an hour to complete, while big ones can take up to six.
Moxxi's Underdome Riot offers players the opportunity to earn two extra skill points as quest rewards and a new bank feature for extra storage.
The content will be released for Xbox 360 on December 29 and for PS3 on January 7.
