Sega chairman Isao Okawa visited Bill Gates several times in an attempt to add Dreamcast compatibility to the Xbox, according to former Microsoft executive Sam Furukawa.
It was hoped that it would give the console some resurgence after the PlayStation 2 was released Kotaku reports.
However, negotiations fell apart when Okawa insisted that online compatibility was kept for Dreamcast games, which Microsoft disapproved of.
Despite the fate of the machine, Okawa put $900 million into Sega before passing away on March 16, 2001.
The console was scrapped later that year after Peter Moore pulled the plug on the system to stop Sega going bankrupt.
