According to sources at the Game Developers Conference, work on a next generation handheld has already started and it could see a release before the end of the year.
Development kits for the device are thought to be similar to those for the GameCube and the Wii, as it will include a Nvidia Tegra chip as its CPU/GPU rather than ATI’s CPU chips used for home consoles.
It has also been speculated that the new platform will support motion controls, such as an accelerometer similar to the iPhone. This supports previous comments made by Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, which were later retracted.
Shigeru Miyamoto has also confirmed that Nintendo is working on new hardware.
