According to IGN, Sony made the comment at the recent Game Developers Conference, in a session intended to convince indie developers about the advantages that exist on the Sony platform.
When discussing the PSP, the company said that the UMD format is "alive and well" and that it will continue to release games both digitally and as UMDs.
The continued use of UMDs has been in question since the release of the PSP Go, which sees players download titles directly from the PlayStation Network.
Sony also revealed that the PSP has sold 17 million units in North America since its release and a total of 60 million units worldwide.
