Dubbed the Nintendo 3DS, it has been billed as a portable device to succeed the current DS line that will be fully backwards compatible with existing software.
The system was announced by president Satoru Iwata at an annual fiscal meeting, confirming that it will be released before the end of March 2011. Further details and images will be shown at E3 in June.
There have been rumours of a new system from Nintendo for several weeks.
