iPhone OS4 adds gaming network, multitasking
Published Friday, Apr 9 2010, 10:05 BST | By Matthew Reynolds

The firmware will be built on seven 'tentpole' features, one of which will be Game Centre, a social network built specifically for the platform.
Similar to Xbox Live and PSN, it will aim to replace existing networks such as Plus+ and Gameloft Live by unifying achievements, leaderboards, friends and online matchmaking through a single log in.
Another major feature will be multitasking, which will allow users to run several Apps in the background and switch between them on the fly.
Other additions include App folders, custom backgrounds, Bluetooth keyboard support, a unified inbox and iBook support.
However, certain devices will support all the new features. Multitasking will not be possible on iPhone 3G and second generation iPod Touch due to performance and battery life issues.
The firmware update will go live in the summer.
