Sources told Kotaku that the firm has picked up where 3D Realms left off when the studio closed last year.
It was also claimed that a playable demo of the game will be available before the end of the year.
Gearbox Software has worked on Borderlands and Brothers In Arms, as well as a scrapped Duke Nukem project.
President Randy Pitchford declined to comment but is said to have hinted that the situation will be clarified at PAX next month.
