The fourth iteration will add many of the features introduced to iPhone 4, including the high definition Retina Display and the Apple A4 chip.
Other additions include a thinner design, a three-axis Gyro sensor, 40 hours' music playback and a rear, front-facing camera complete with FaceTime support over WiFi.
CEO Steve Jobs said that the latest device will offer "even better gaming" than previous iterations.
It was added that the platform is now the most popular portable gaming system, outselling PSP and DS on a regular basis, and currently holds over half of the marketshare for handheld consoles.
Priced at £189 for 8GB, £239 for 32GB and £329 for 64GB, it will be available from next week along with iOS 4.1 and Game Centre.
The device was part of a new iPod, Apple TV and iTunes lineup introduced at this year's Apple iPod Conference.
