It generated more than $200 million (£127m) across the United States and Europe in its opening 24 hours.
Based on US sales alone, it is the year's biggest entertainment release, eclipsing three-day opening weekends for movies Iron Man 2, Alice In Wonderland and Toy Story 3.
"Halo: Reach is the biggest game Microsoft has ever released, and its launch has already surpassed every game, movie and entertainment launch this year," said corporate vice president Phil Spencer.
"Every major instalment has grown in scope and popularity, firmly cementing the Halo franchise as one of the most popular entertainment properties in the world over the past decade."
Halo: Reach was released earlier this week on Xbox 360.
