Series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced the game's development during a retrospective of the 1985 original.
"So, in the interests of adopting new technology for the Super Mario Bros. tradition, I am now making a new Super Mario Bros. game for the Nintendo 3DS system," he said.
Miyamoto added that he wants to show the game to "everyone as soon as possible".
The 3DS will be available in Europe from March 25 and North America from March 28.
