Lead network engineer David Aldridge confirmed the status of its next project during the firm's GDC panel 'I Shot You First: Networking the Gameplay of Halo: Reach', according to IGN.
Alridge specifically said that it will be an "action" MMO, adding that it will not be "WoW in space".
The new IP will be owned by Bungie but published by Activision as part of a ten-year exclusivity deal.
Last month, it was rumoured that the project will be a first-person shooter titled Destiny.
