According to figures from CNBC, the rhythm action sequel recently surpassed previous record holder Call Of Duty: Black Ops to claim the top spot.
Guitar Hero III has netted $830.9 million (£518.14m) since its launch in 2007. However, it should be noted that its closest competitor Black Ops - which sits at $787.4 million (£491m) - was only released last November.
Other titles in the top ten include Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii and Call Of Duty 4. Overall, Activision claimed five slots on the chart, Nintendo four and MTV Games one.
Last month, Activision announced that it is disbanding its Guitar Hero division and scrapping development on the series.
Guitar Hero III: Legends Of Rock is the third core entry in the music franchise, and the fourth overall. It was released for PS2, PS3, Wii, and Xbox 360 in October 2007.
