Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton told Bloomberg that disruptions to production may see the device release in only one region this year.
However, Tretton said that a delayed worldwide release will help developers work on their launch titles.
"It may be the straw that says 'maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year'," he said. "A delayed introduction may give game developers in certain regions more time to complete their software."
Before last month's earthquake, it was rumoured that the NGP was going to be released in Europe on November 11.
Sony Europe had revealed that the device would be available by Christmas in at least one region, and that it would be "affordable".
