Sony confirmed that the landmark figure was passed on March 29, alongside sales of 8m for motion controller PlayStation Move on April 3.
It was added that there are over 75m registered PlayStation Network accounts across 59 countries worldwide.
"The PS3 system, equipped with future proof cutting-edge technologies including the powerful Cell Broadband Engine and RSX processors as well as the Blu-ray disc player and HDMI, has delivered users with high definition and high-quality entertainment experience since its launch in November 2006," read a press release.
"SCE will continue to further expand the PS3 platform and create a new world of computer entertainment."
The original PlayStation 3 was later joined by a slimline version in September 2009.
In February, it was rumoured that Sony was working on a more secure system following several hacks earlier this year.
