Starhawk has been announced exclusively for PlayStation 3.

The follow-up to 2007 online shooter Warhawk will see the return of land and air vehicular combat, as well as the addition of a Build & Battle system that can add new content to the battlefield.

Buildings, vehicles and weapons can be deployed from orbital dropships in real time to help players with their objectives.

Alongside 32-player multiplayer matches, there will be an all-new single-player campaign, which will see two warring factions fight over a dangerous resource known as Rift Energy.

It will also support a number of local co-operative options, such as four-player split-screen play and a mode featuring endless waves of enemies to fight.

The game will launch alongside an Android application allowing users to keep track of friends, clans and statistics away from the console.

Starhawk, to be developed by LightBox Interactive in co-operation with Sony Santa Monica studio, will be available sometime in 2012.

Warhawk was nominated for a BAFTA in 2007. The first rumours for a space-bound sequel emerged in early 2009.
