Speaking at Nintendo's E3 press conference in Los Angeles, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the game would be available to purchase worldwide by the end of the day.
The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening becomes the first Game Boy Colour title to be released for the 3DS eShop and follows original Game Boy titles Super Mario Land, Alleyway, Radar Mission and Tennis, which are also available to download.
The 3DS eShop launched earlier today and features a free 3D version of NES title Excitebike, as well as a complimentary 3DSWare Pokédex application.
The release of The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening is part of Zelda's 25th anniversary celebrations.
The game was originally released on the Game Boy in 1993, before being ported to the Game Boy Colour in 1998.
