A version for Nintendo's new console is unlikely because it is "built to be played with a Wii controller", Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils Aime told Venturebeat.
Zelda: Skyward Sword's lengthy development had sparked rumours that Nintendo would delay the game's release for the Wii U launch.
In 2006, Zelda: Twilight Princess was delayed so it could be released on both the GameCube and the Wii simultaneously.
Fils Aime also said that the first showing of Zelda on Wii U was not a full game but a teaser of what is to come.
"We showed what Link [the main character of Zelda] might look like in a 1080p environment, and it got people pretty excited," he said.
A series of Zelda titles are planned for the series's 25th anniversary, including Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D this Friday and a free version of Zelda: Four Swords in September.
Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be available on Wii later this year.
