During E3, Nintendo admitted that it is looking into enabling multiple Wii U controllers per system.
"There's a cost issue," Nintendo president Satoru Iwata told Japanese business site Diamond Online, adding that "technically it is possible for the Wii U to support multiple Wii U controllers" but at "considerable" cost to consumers.
"We're not planning on asking our customers to buy multiple Wii U controllers," he declared.
By only allowing a single Wii U controller to be used with each system, Nintendo would diminish the importance of its own technology, limiting the new system's appeal to both developers and gamers.
The Wii U controller features a six-inch touch screen, traditional buttons, a camera, microphone, stereo speakers, gyroscope and an accelerometer. Up to four Wii remotes can also be used with each Wii U system.
The Wii U will be available worldwide in 2012.
