Black Rock Studios will be closing its doors, it has been revealed.

Disney Interactive will not commission any new projects at the Brighton-based studio and is to make its 40 staff members redundant, according to Develop.

"Disney Interactive Studios confirms that Black Rock Studios' current project has not been greenlit for further development, consequently the company informed employees yesterday of the intent to enter a consultation process on the proposal to close the studios," read a statement.

"Disney's move into the UK games development space was much-hyped and well-funded. The publisher was convinced the studio would help it build an audience in the racing genre, which has real core and casual gamer appeal."

Black Rock Studios was purchased from Climax in 2006, and went on to create critically-acclaimed racing titles Pure and Split/Second: Velocity.

THQ closed Homefront developer Kaos Studios last month, moving development of a sequel to THQ Montreal.
