The Nightmare on Elm Street murderer will be based on the character in the 2010 remake rather than the Robert Englund original, according to IGN.
As well as his trademark claws, Freddy will have his own methods of dispatching other characters at the end of each fight.
Freddy will be the fourth and final downloadable fighter for Mortal Kombat, following Scarlet, Kenshi and Rain.
He will be available from August 9 on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
