Electronic Arts has announced a novel based on Battlefield 3.

Battlefield 3: The Russian will be written by former SAS operator Andy McNab and co-author Peter Grimsdale. McNab was a best-selling author for his book Bravo Two Zero, which told the story of his own experiences in the Gulf War.

Battlefield 3: The Russian tells the back-story of RU Special Forces operator Dima, one of the soldiers players will control during the single-player campaign of Battlefield 3.

"It is impossible for any single medium to fully capture the emotion and intensity of war. The Battlefield 3: The Russian novel is one window into the experience, and the game is another. They complement each other perfectly," said McNab.

In addition to the tie-in novel, McNab has worked closely with the DICE team to ensure that the game captures the experience of modern warfare.

"Working with DICE has been a fantastic ride. Battlefield 3 is going to surprise people this autumn. The story, the characters, the world and the intense action come together to create a resonant, memorable experience," he said.

Battlefield 3 will launch on October 25 in North America and October 28 in Europe, two weeks prior to Modern Warfare 3's November 8 worldwide release.

Battlefield 3: The Russian will be published on October 28.
