Speaking to Digital Spy, creative director Tim Willits has claimed that the game offers players "the best of both worlds" as a new IP with traditional first-person shooter mechanics.
Willits said: "One of the advantages that id has is that with Doom, Quake and Wolfenstein, we can come up with new IPs and new franchises and have people notice. It's really hard with a new IP to have anyone care what you are doing.
"So what's really exciting about RAGE is that it's fun to do something unique and different. We had a clean slate, so we could add all kinds of crazy stuff like Mutant Bash TV and racing. But it still has that id spirit. I think it's the best of both worlds, brand new ip, but still holds close to the classics."
RAGE is in development for Xbox 360, PC and PS3. The 360 version will have an optional 22GB system install and ship on three DVDs.
The game will be released on October 4 in North America and October 7 in Europe.
