SCEE head Jim Ryan told MCV that the console has passed the milestone in the territory and still has "lots of life" left in it.
Sony announced a worldwide PS3 price drop at gamescom 2011. The 160GB model was reduced to $249 in North America and €249 in Europe. It retails at £199 in the UK.
"The new price for PS3 will make the console accessible to a broad range of new consumers," said SCEE's UK marketing director Alan Duncan.
The PlayStation 2 sold more than 50 million units in Europe during its life cycle. Ryan added that the PS3 could eventually surpass this figure, claiming that there is more "still to come" from the platform.
Sony is promoting the PS3 price drop with an large-scale marking campaign featuring 5,000 roadside billboards in the UK, as well as extensive advertisements for Resistance 3, DanceStar Party, PS Move and Uncharted 3.
