The game, known as Professor Layton and the Last Specter in North America, is the fourth game in the popular DS puzzle series. It is a prequel that "begins a new trilogy" set three years before Professor Layton and the Curious Village.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter will also include the bonus RPG Professor Layton's London Life, providing "more than 100 hours of additional content". Professor Layton's London Life was created by developer Brownie Brown, best known for the Mother/Earthbound series.
Professor Layton's London Life will be available from the start of the game exclusively for the North American release. The bonus RPG will need to be unlocked in the European version.
Developer Level-5 has already begun work on the sixth Professor Layton game for Nintendo 3DS. The third game in the series, Professor Layton and the Lost Future, was met with high praise from fans and critics alike.
Professor Layton and the Last Specter will release on Nintendo DS in North America on October 17. Professor Layton and the Spectre's Call is scheduled to release on Nintendo DS in Europe in November.
