Chief technology officer Tim Sweeney made the announcement at a presentation during the Adobe Max 11 conference in Los Angeles, Wired reports.
The move will enable developers to run high-end console titles in a browser via the new Adobe Flash Player 11. Epic demonstrated this with video footage of Unreal Tournament 3 running on a web page.
"It turned out to look even better than the version we shipped on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with improvements like global illumination, better shadows, and god rays," said Epic vice president Mark Rein.
"There's still some work to do before we can release this technology to developers," Rein added, explaining that studios using the Unreal Development Kit will automatically get the feature upon release.
Unreal Engine 3 technology powers a host of modern console games, including Gears of War and Mass Effect. It was also used in the iOS hit Infinity Blade.
