The prolific Olympic gold medalist told Digital Spy that releasing a swimming game is part of an ongoing goal to raise the profile of the sport.
Phelps said: "I've been able to see how some video games are made, and being able to really work to make this the best game that we could was a lot of fun, a lot of work.
"But I think for me, this is all really a dream come true - to be able to do so many things that the sport hasn't seen and things that the gaming world has never seen."
Phelps continued: "It's not just sitting on the couch and pressing buttons, you actually have to get up and make the movements. It's more of an active video game, and that's something that's very important to me, to be able to get up and have a form of exercise as you're playing the video game. It's interesting and fun."

Phelps added that the hands-free Kinect peripheral is a "cool way" to play games.
"I've been a gamer my whole entire life, and I think Kinect is a cool way to play video games," he said.
"You actually have to make the movements, and get up and move around. I think it's a great idea and hopefully we can have a lot of good success with the game."
Michael Phelps: Push the Limit is available on Xbox 360 now in North America and from October 14 in Europe.
