Retailers including Amazon Japan and Yodobashi list the handheld platform as 'out of stock' on their websites, RPG Site reports.
Sofmap, Bic Camera and Joshin also list the 3G or WiFi enabled PS Vita models as unavailable.
The sales figures suggest that Western customers hoping to import the system from Japan may encounter difficulties obtaining it at launch. Sony previously confirmed that the platform will be region-free.
Sony released the full specifications for Vita at the Tokyo Game Show, confirming that the device will support between three and five hours of battery life for gameplay. It will also feature front and rear cameras and a multi-touch pad.
PlayStation Vita launches in Japan on December 17 before arriving in the West early next year.
