President Satoru Iwata told investors that the firm will apply the lessons learned from the Nintendo 3DS to the Wii U launch.
"As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch."
Those lessons include a redesign of the 3DS eShop to allow demos, downloadable content and sleep mode background downloads.
Iwata also revealed that the "final format" of the Wii U will be revealed at E3 2012. Wii U debuted at E3 2011, and raised many questions regarding 3D support, its online services and its support for multiple controllers.
Nintendo reiterated previous comments that Wii U will launch during the firm's next fiscal year. Nintendo's next fiscal year begins April 2012, positioning the Wii U launch in the window between E3 2012 in June and March 2013.
Yesterday Nintendo announced huge losses for its latest financial quarter, with the firm expected to see its first annual loss in 30 years.
