Developer Naughty Dog said that it has a double meaning, and that it looks at both the deception of Sir Francis Drake and the game's protagonist Nathan Drake.
"Basically it started with Sir Francis Drake's deception, when he was travelling around the world and coming back from America," game director Justin Richmond told Digital Spy.
"He supposedly took six months across the Indian Ocean when it should have only taken him about 30 days, and so that's where we started, who is he deceiving, and why? Nathan Drake is on the trail of that.
"And also, [there's] Nathan Drake's deception, so you know, pulling the wool over people's eyes or bringing them along on adventures on false pretences, or even deceiving himself as to what he needs or what he wants to be. So it's all of those things wrapped up into one."
Community strategist Arne Meyer added: "We've always tried to have subtitles that have had multiple meanings tied into the story, because that's what we wanted people to get out of them. It's always been a very deliberate process."
The final game was recently revealed to include beta access for Starhawk.
Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception is available exclusively on PlayStation 3 now in the US and from tomorrow (November 2) in Europe.
