President Frank Gibeau confirmed the sequel during a keynote speech at the University of California, according to IGN.
A spokesperson later added: "Frank was speaking broadly about the Battlefield brand - a brand that EA is deeply passionate about and a fan community that EA is committed to."
Battlefield 3 is already one of EA's most successful games, breaking the firm's shipping record with ten million copies to retailers on launch day.
It was recently rumoured that the PC edition of the game could be released through Steam. EA previously avoided the platform, claiming that it restricts its "ability to directly support players".
Battlefield 3 is available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC now.
