The announcement came after Square Enix signed a deal with Epic Games Japan.
No specific games to use the engine have been revealed at this time.
"Many Western games have achieved great success with the Unreal Engine, and this milestone reflects the Japanese development community's trust in our technical prowess," said Taka Kawasaki, territory manager for Epic Games Japan.
Unreal Engine 3 is a development tool created by Gears of War developer Epic Games, and has been used in games ranging from Mass Effect to Infinity Blade on iOS.
Square Enix previously used Unreal Engine 3 for the Xbox 360 and PC role-playing game The Last Remnant.
