According to Andriasang, the game is being produced by Dragon Quest head Ryutaro Ichimura and will target the Western market.
It will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3 and is being considered for release on next-generation consoles.
Currently being developed in-house with a team of 35, Square Enix will hold a mass recruitment drive in the coming months.
If reports are to be believed, the game will be officially unveiled in this week's issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu.
The rumours correspond with a recent report that Square Enix is planning to use the Unreal Engine 3 for multiple new titles.
Square Enix previously used Unreal Engine 3 for the Xbox 360 and PC role-playing game The Last Remnant.
