The PlayStation 3 is to be given a firmware update this week.

The download will focus on adding PlayStation Vita compatibility, allowing owners of the handheld to copy their media between systems, back up saves and update the firmware.

Elsewhere, PlayStation Plus members can now decide whether to enable or disable automatic updates for game patches, system software updates, recommended games and syncing Trophy information.

Finally, there will be additional privacy settings for filtering friend requests and messages.

A future update will allow PlayStation 3 games to be streamed to Vita, according to a rumour.

Earlier this month, Sony introduced new game sharing restrictions on PlayStation Network, whereby games can only be played on two systems at a time.

PlayStation Network has been rumoured to be receiving an image-driven redesign akin to Xbox Live and Steam.

PlayStation Vita will be available on December 17 in Japan and from February 22 in North America and Europe.
