Marvel Heroes has been announced by Gazillion Entertainment.
The massively multiplayer online (MMO) game has been in development at the studio for some time, but has now been given an official title.
Avengers writer Brian Michael Bendis will provide a script for the game. Players will take control of established Marvel Comics heroes, including Deadpool, Captain America, Hulk, Iron Man and Spider-Man.
DC Comics teamed up with Sony Computer Entertainment to release the DC Universe Online MMO in 2010. The game became a free-to-play title earlier this year.
The game's senior producer Wes Yanagi told Digital Spy in a 2010 interview that he welcomes competition from a Marvel Comics MMO.
"Any growth in the general popularity of comic book properties as well as other MMO titles is great for DC Universe Online. The success of movies like The Dark Knight have reignited the genre and a whole new demographic is suddenly engaging with these characters," he said.
"There are several new movies in the works as well as other games like the [Marvel MMO] all in production. Any comic book game or movie that comes out and delivers a high quality entertainment experience to the fans is a positive for all of us."
Marvel Heroes is expected to be released for PC in 2012. Console releases are yet to be confirmed.
