According to Japan's Nikkei news outlet, Nintendo and third-party developers will begin selling DLC for 3DS games in 2012, beginning with Fire Emblem, although the report did not specify details of the DLC.
Nintendo has subsequently held a press conference where it was announced that Fire Emblem will release in Japan April 19, though no DLC plans were mentioned.
Earlier this year, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata expressed that paid DLC will be a part of Nintendo's plans for both the 3DS and Wii U.
Nintendo of America's Reggie Fils-Aime clarified that point in November, stating that DLC will be used for additional content rather than releasing unfinished games and supplementing them with DLC.
Fire Emblem on 3DS was first announced during Nintendo's pre-Tokyo Game Show presentation, and will feature co-operative play for the first time in the series. No release details have been issued for Europe or North America at this time.
