Neither did we until we had a gander at the Guinness World Records 2012: Gamer's Edition, a book choc-full of unusual and astonishing video game facts, stats and displays of skill.

Following the release of the latest book earlier this week, we take a look at some of the most unique and extraordinary video game records ever set. From fastest lap times to largest console collections; tournament wins to coveted high-scores, here are 12 of the best Guinness gaming records.

Most international Street Fighter competition wins/First woman to win a pro-Street Fighter event: If you know your Hadoukens from your Shoryukens, you might fancy your chances against these pro-Street Fighter players. The guy on the left is UK gamer Ryan Hart, the winner of 450 Street Fighter events in 13 different countries - the most international Street Fighter competition wins of all time. On the right is "Kayane" (aka Marie-Laure Norindr), the first female gamer to win a pro-Street Fighter tournament.
