Described by Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata as a "totally new side-scrolling action Super Mario in 2D", the game is due to be released in the next fiscal year, reports Game Zone.
No further details were given about the "key title", other than that it joins the likes of Luigi's Mansion, Mario Tennis, Rune Factory 4 and Paper Mario, all of which will be released at "a steadier pace" over the coming 12 months.
A number of Mario-themed Nintendo games have launched on the 3DS since November. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 were both released before Christmas, while Mario And Sonic At The 2012 London Olympic Games is due to be released on February 10.
Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have broken several records in the US, becoming the fastest-selling games in their respective franchises.
