Nintendo Network, a new online service akin to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, has been announced for the Wii U and 3DS.
The system will offer competition and communication among users, as well as the sale of digital content, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata told investors.

Nintendo Network will also be used to introduce personal user accounts for Wii U owners, and will support multiple user accounts per system.
Iwata explained that elements such as community-building functionality had already been used in games such as Mario Kart 7.
It was added that the infrastructure was in place to support full retail releases on both the 3DS and Wii U.

There was also a suggestion that the Wii U would not be equipped with a hard drive, after Iwata said that a Wii U games download service is beholden to "memory capacity on consumers' SD memory cards", according to Develop.
Earlier today, Iwata also revealed the existence of a new side-scrolling Super Mario game for the Nintendo 3DS.
