CVG claims that "a source close to the project" revealed the 18th century backdrop and confirmed that the game will feature a new protagonist.
Ubisoft hinted at an American setting for the next entry in the series with the Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood 'Da Vinci Disappearance' DLC, which had players decrypt a set of co-ordinates leading to New York. A similar clue appeared at the end of Assassin's Creed: Revelations.
The publisher also included "The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution" as one of the options in a survey issued last year.
Ubisoft was looking to gauge fans' opinion on which era the next game should take place in.
However, the company is yet to comment on the latest rumours.
Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO, has previously said that the next Assassin's Creed will be the "biggest to date."
