The Last of Us has been given its first images.
The three in-game screenshots show melee combat, exploring the city streets, and reveal that it will be set in the US city of Pittsburgh, according to Game Informer.
New details of the game have also been revealed. Both gunplay and melee combat will be an important part, with weapons breaking after continued use, requiring the player to find new items regularly.
The adventure will be set in a more colourful world than other post-apocalyptic games, using overgrown vegetation in cities to add variety.
It was also stressed that The Last of Us will not be one long escort mission, and while Ellie cannot be controlled at any point, keeping track of her was not a problem during a demo sequence.
Announced at last year's Spike TV VGAs, The Last of Us follows two survivors, Joel and Ellie, in a world turned upside down by a fungus-like virus.
Work on the project began after Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and it has been in development for over two years.
The Last of Us will be released exclusively on PlayStation 3 sometime in 2013.
