VentureBeat dug up the 2010 listing, which describes a device called 'Position-Dependent Gaming 3D controller, and Handheld as a Remote'.
The hardware is apparently an input that allows interaction between what is depicted on its screen and images on a television set. Nintendo's upcoming Wii U console will feature a similar controller.
Sony describes the item as a "mobile device", which suggests that the application could also refer to a future handheld console. The studio previously confirmed that its new PlayStation Vita handheld can interact with a PlayStation 3 in a similar way to the Wii U interface.
The report has given rise to speculation that touch-screen tablets will play a significant role during the next console generation.
Sony is yet to confirm that it is working on a touch-screen controller.
