A Sony representative told Kotaku that the UMD Passport programme has been cancelled in North America.
The UMD Passport programme launched alongside the PlayStation Vita in Japan, allowing users to download previously purchased PSP games on Vita for a small fee rather than purchase a second digital copy.
No explanation was offered for why the UMD Passport programme will not be available in North America, and Sony Europe has not commented on UMD Passport availability at this time.
Sony recently announced it will be rebranding the PlayStation Network to the Sony Entertainment Network.
PlayStation Vita sales were off to a "good start" according to Sony, despite recently falling behind the PSP in Japan.
Sony's latest handheld will launch in Europe and North America on February 22, 2012.
