Though it arrived after the North American launch, it marked the birth of Microsoft's new gaming division as a worldwide force. In an industry still dominated by Japanese consoles and games, the Xbox was the first Western system to gain a significant foothold since the video game industry crash of the early 1980s.
Along with the Xbox came blockbuster franchises like Halo, which was celebrated with an Anniversary just last year.
Other launch titles included Dead or Alive 3, Amped: Freestyle Snowboarding, Fuzion Frenzy, Project Gotham Racing, Jet Set Radio Future and Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee.
Despite a turbulent debut, with a price drop and release of a smaller, sleeker controller soon after launch, the Xbox brand grew over the coming decade, with the launch of Xbox Live in 2002, best-selling release Halo 2 in 2004, and digital distribution with Xbox Live Arcade. In 2005, Microsoft launched its successor, the Xbox 360, which has sold over 66 million systems.
To celebrate the original Xbox's ten-year anniversary, Microsoft has launched an interactive timeline detailing the console's history from launch to the present day.
