'Metal Gear' series sells 31 million units

By
Konami's Metal Gear franchise has sold more than 31 million units since its 1987 debut.

The publisher confirmed that Hideo Kojima's stealth series reached the milestone in December last year, following the release of Metal Gear Solid HD Collection in Japan and the US.

The news coincides with reports that images from the games will be featured in the exhibition 'The Art of Video Games' at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, USA. Kojima himself will attend the museum to give a talk with the curator.

Metal Gear debuted as a top-down shooter for the MSX2 computer in 1987. The franchise evolved into the Metal Gear Solid series in 1998, which went on to become some of the most popular titles on Sony platforms.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in Europe earlier this year, compiling remastered ports of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.

Kojima's studio is currently hiring developers for the next entry in the series, which will use its new Fox Engine.
