The online first-person shooter is designed with competitive skill-based gameplay in mind, where players succeed through teamwork and tactics rather than perks.
Unique social features will be available, such as the ability to nominate a 'nemesis' that other players can track down as a bounty.
The free-to-play title will also offer micro-transactions and customisable weapons for a tailored experience.
A beta starting April 4 will provide an additional entry key to be given to a friend.
"With World of Mercenaries we are bringing together what our team of veterans of the FPS genre believes is the best of what has been done and is to be wished for - be it in terms of graphics, controls or skill-based gameplay," said executive producer Bogdan Oprescu.
"We are shaping something never experienced before, and are fully confident it will be achieved with the enthusiasm and help of our beta testers."
World of Mercenaries will be available through Steam by the end of the year.
