"The Mechromancer will be an all-new playable character that we plan to develop after work on Borderlands 2 is finished and the game is in certification," Gearbox said in a statement.

"Currently, she exists as an idea and a couple of sketches, but we expect her to become a reality at some time after Borderlands 2 is completed."

The class will be made available to players as DLC within 60 to 90 days of Borderlands 2's release.

The Mechromancer class is also being offered as a free download to members of the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club. Access to Premiere Club content will be available to pre-orders through select retailers - thehut.com, Play.com and Amazon in the UK and Best Buy, GameStop and Amazon in the US.

Borderlands 2 will be available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC on September 18 in North America and on September 21 across Europe.
