Nintendo of America later confirmed via Twitter that it will release New Super Mario Bros 2 in the US in the same month.

The original New Super Mario Bros debuted on DS in 2006. It was followed by a home console follow-up for the Wii in 2009, which added four-player support and new power-ups.

Full details for the 3DS sequel are yet to be revealed, though the screenshots confirm that it will be another side-scrolling entry in the series, and that the 'Raccoon Mario' power-up from Super Mario Bros 3 will make a return.

New Super Mario Bros 2 is yet to be given a release date for Europe.
