Nintendo titles to be downloadable day-one on 3DS, Wii U

Nintendo will offer its own releases digitally starting this summer, it has been revealed.

The Japanese publisher has announced that future 3DS and Wii U first-party titles will be available at both retail and from the eShop on day one.

Super Mario Bros. 2 will be the first to showcase the initiative this August, while the Wii U will also offer digital downloads for all first-party releases at launch.

"Since the packaged and the digital download formats both have their own merits, we would like to offer both of these options to our consumers," said the firm at a financial meeting.

Nintendo said that it publishes multiple titles offering "daily communication", including Animal Crossing and Nintendogs, and having them available digitally would be an added convenience.

3DS releases will be stored on an SD card but won't be playable on devices it was not downloaded on.

Nintendo will also have retailers "proactively involved" in the sale of digital products, decreasing inventory risks, opportunity losses and opening up a new avenue for selling games.

Retailers will be able to set the price of digital downloads, just like packaged software, allowing them to vary the price of the product.

New first-party titles and features will be unveiled for Wii U at the E3 gaming expo in June.
